During the evening several members were recognized for their years of service with pins from the department and citations from the House of Delagates and State Senate. Among those being recognized were John Webster for an impressive 50 years of dedication followed by Lester Branson with 40 years and Helen Conard with 30 years. Receiving their lifetime status with 25 years each are Guy Geisel, Gary Geisel and Bobby Fearins. Several members reached their 10 years and 5 years of membership. While units responded, dispatched advised of the updated interesection of Federalsburg Highway and Dion Road. EMS-3 arrived to confirm a vehicle off the roadway with no entrapment. Rescue 300 (6/ Berneski) and Chief 3 (Fretterd) arrived and secured the vehicle. Ambulance 392 obtained a refusal and units were placed available. The Midshore Dive Team was dispatched as well to assist with the operations. Rescue 300 (5/Sefton) arrived to confirm a car into the water, however the water level was up to the seat and they were unable to confirm if there was an occupant. Dive members from Preston VFD arrived and entered the car and confirmed no occupants were inside and assisted in hooking a tow cable to the car so it could be removed. Footprints were found on the opposite side of the creek leading law enforcement officials to believe the driver made it out of the vehicle. Crews cleared within one hour of the dispatch. Chief 3 (Fretterd) arrived on scene with PM13 and confirmed one subject in the roadway. Rescue 300 arrived and crews assisted PM13 with the pedestrian, as well as checked the driver of the vehicle. The driver refused medical services. Due to inclement weather the pedestrian was transported to Pennisula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury priority 2 by PM13. Units cleared at 1747. Chief3 (Fretterd) arrived to find obvious damage to the entrance of the store. The driver of the vehicle had backed the car away from the building prior to arrival. Chief Fretterd assumed Dollar General Command, and requested a building inspector respond to the scene. Rescue 300 (5/Mullikin) arrived, and was assigned building evacuation, and utility control. Ambulance 392 (Roy/W. Martin) arrived and assessed the driver of the car who refused medical services. Once the scene was secured, it was turned over to Denton PD and units cleared. The store remained closed for the day. In the preceding times during Horse Drawn Apparatus, it was difficult to back the wagons into the station house with horses, so the members would push the wagon back into the station house. In modern times the Horse Drawn Apparatus have been replaced by motorized vehicles however the tradition occurs across the nation still today of pushing the apparatus into the station. The Officers and Members of the DVFC housed Engine 302 today. Several members of mutual aid companies, and local and county commissioners were on hand to help celebrate the event. The apparatus is a 2011 Pierce Arrow XT fire engine powered by a 515hp Detroit 60 series motor, and a Allison transmission. The engine holds 6 personnel and carries 780 gallons of water, 1200 feet of 5" LDH supply line, and over 1000' of attack lines. It has a 2000gpm Hale 2 stage pump and a 6.5KW Honda generator. The unit is designated as Engine 302 and replaces a 1987 Spartan LTI 55' telesquirt. The unit was purchased through Atlantic Emergency Services with James Bambary as the salesperson. After a blessing given by DVFC Fire Chaplain Rev. Bill Davis, President John Webster climbed into the driver seat, released the parking brake, and members pushed the apparatus into the firehouse. Following some more training, and final mounting of equipment, Engine 302 was placed in service Christmas Eve night. Chief 3 (Fretterd) arrived to find a Pickup truck that had crossed the intersection and hit the enbankment flipping over before coming to rest near a wood line. Officer 315 established Harmony Road command. The vehicle had no occupants around it. On the arrival of Rescue 300, crews illuminated the area with the light tower and search the wood line and field using a Thermal Imaging Camera without success. Multiple Law Enforcement officers arrived and search the opposite side of the woods, and nearby roadways and houses. No occupant was found. The scene was turned over to MSP and units went available. Old Monroe Fire Protection District in Missouri purchased the 1987 Spartan LTI telesquirt from us. Members flew into BWI Airport this morning and were greeted by Chief Fretterd. Top Call Responders for the month were Engineer Guy Geisel 16 calls, Capt. Scott Sefton 15 calls, Firefighters Bruce Cathcart and Bob Mullikin 14 calls, and Firefighter Lester Branson and Engineer John Webster with 12 calls. DVFC had an average of 3.6 minute response time from the time the call was dispatched to the time the first fire apparatus left the station, and had an average of 11 personnel on each call. Asst. Chief Higgs arrived on scene to find nothing evident from Side A. Engine 304's crew investigated and found a small fire in a dust collector with evidence of several small dust piles on fire. Crews dismantled the colector to extinguish all the fire. Tower 310 and Tower 1 arrived and laddered the building checking the exhaust system as well. Crews returned at 1131. Members completed 2 days of inspections with Graphic Artist, Engineers, and the Assembly Crew to build another valuable piece of apparatus to help protect our community. The full committee will travel back to Pierce later this month to complete the Final Inspection of Engine 302, with a deliverly the first of November. Chief 3 (Fretterd) arrived to find a minivan off the roadway into trees. The patient had minor injuries however was still in the driver seat. Rescue 300 (D. Martin) was assigned to "Pop" the passenger side sliding door to ease the patient out of the vehicle. Engine 304 arrived and assisted the Rescue crew. Ambulance 392's crew packaged and transported the patient to Memorial Hospital at Easton. PM13 and MSP were also on the scene. Units cleared by 1741 hours. Engine 304 arrived on the scene and found smoke showing from Side A and advanced a hoseline for Fire Attack. Quick thinking of the occupants alerting their neighbors of a fire led to a neighbor dowsing several fire extinguishers on the and knocked the fire down until the fire company arrived. An investigation found that a small child had found a lighter and lit a piece of clothing on fire then threw it on the bed. No one was injured, and the fire was contained to to the mattress. After the incident the fire company was able to talk to the family and child on home safety and preventing future incidents. Units cleared by 1900. Units went on the scene with two vehicles involved, one in the eastbound lane of Shore Highway and one in the westbound lanes of Shore Highway. Chief 3 (Fretterd) arrived moments later and established River Road Command. Engine 304 (3/DC Porter) arrived and was tasked with traffic control until law Enforcement arrived. PM13 transported one patient to Memorial Hospital in Easton. Units cleared at 1303. With the heavy rains Friday during Summerfest, as well as rain today and tomorrow night, the ground is going to be super saturated. Citizens are urged to have an Emergency Kit prepared for 2-3 days. Kits should include drinkable water, can foods, supplies for the elderly and infants as well as batteries, flashlights, etc. in the event of the loss of power. Our area is expected to be hit around Saturday afternoon lasting about 24 hours. Winds are expected to sustain 50-60 mph with gust over 70mph. Check your residence and yard to make sure items are secure and don't become projectiles in the wind. Also please do not attempt to drive through high water. The fire has rapidly spread to 6,000 acres. Units on the scene have about a ten percent containment of the fire. However, prevailing winds have shift the haze and odor of smoke up the Bay areas and to the Southern, Central, and Eastern Shore portions of the state. These conditions will continue throughout the day according to the National Weather Services. Many people woke up this morning to a strong odor of smoke due to this. Wed, 14 Sep 2011 13:52:18 GMT http://www.dentonvfc.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=251 Denton VFC Responds to Multiple Barn Fire http://www.dentonvfc.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=247 At 1623 hours today Denton, Greensboro, Ridgely and Goldsboro Fire Companies along with the County Department of Emergency Services were dispatched to a Working Barn Fire near the intersection of Burrsville Road and Baker Road. As units were dispatched a large column of smoke could be seen from town limits. Assistant Chief Higgs and PM392 (Lister/McCombs) arrived in the 26000 block of Burrsville Road to find three barns involved with fire. Chief Higgs assumed Burrsville Road command as soon after requested a Tanker Task Force. Engine 304 (Mullikin) arrived and laid a 5" supply line from the road and started to attack Barn 1 on the east side of the property. Engine 604 laid a second supply line and attacked began the attack on Barn's 2 and 3. Crews were able to extinquish a small fire in Barn 3 and save the structure. Crews were hampered by large fire loads in and around all three Barn by large piles of straw. The occupants of the farm stated they were off loading straw into Barn 1 when a bale clipped an electric wire and caused an arc setting the straw on fire. High heat and dry conditions were believed to accelerate the fire into the quick growth that the fire department encountered. Command was transferred to Chief Fretterd on his arrival and Chief Higgs was assigned Fire Attack. Chief 4 (Utz) was assigned Water Supply Officer. Several sites were utilized near the scene and around town for tankers to haul water to the scene. Command requested a Second Alarm for additional staffing due to the heat condition. Over 60 firefighters from thirteen fire companies responded and assisted in the operation. The fire was Under Control at approximately 1730 hours, however units worked until 2025 hours before clearing the scene. One firefighter was transported to Memorial Hospital with minor injuries due to the heat, and was treated and released. Units arrived within seven minutes to find a working kitchen fire with extension to the residence. E304 arrived and advanced handline into the dwelling. Units were able to bring the fire under control within 24 minutes of the arrival. Units worked on the scene for another hour and a half overhauling the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. During the transfer Kent Center requested Engine 305 to respond to the scene in the 800 block of Staytonville Road to assist with a Working House Fire. E305 arrived to find multiple companies battling a large 2 1/2 story single family dwelling. Crews worked until being released at 0435 hours, and then returned back to the station. Mr. William Boylan from the Monsanto Fund and Mrs. Wheatley presneted Chief Fretterd and the members of the Denton VFC the check during their monthly meeting. The money went to repairs and equipement for their brush truck. The Denton VFC would like to send their deepest appreciation to The Monsanto Fund and The Wheatley's for making this happen.
